Happy Birthday Mom!! June 7th

Dolores B. Haacke would be 82 years old today. I miss her so much. I would love to really celebrate today for her by fixing a big dish of sauerkraut and dumplings, but since I don’t have time for that today this will have to do.
My mother was a talented lady. She wrote a poem about the birthday fairy, and I want to share it with you.
Happy Birthday Mom - I love you!!!

The Birthday Fairy
“Awake and rejoice, fairest child of earth,
For today is the greatest of days since your birth.
Today shalt thou have three gifts of thy heart,
Three precious wishes to thee I’ll impart.

Think, fairest child, be it silver and gold?
Or may it be diamonds and rubies of old?
Perhaps thy desires are for power and glory,
Of castles and princes that are told of in stories.

Thus spake the wee fairy to this child of earth,
And she pondered and thought of these gifts and their worth.
Sore tempted was she for these earthly treasures.
Surely no others could give such pleasures.

Then a voice murmured, “Take care, dearest child,
These gifts are vain and are meant to beguile.”
So she said to the fairy, “Tho thy gifts be most dear,
They have value only on earth, I fear.”

“So the gift of wisdom will be my first choice,
That I might teach all who hear my voice.
Then may I be humble and free of pride,
That the sick and needy will come to my side.”

“For the last wish I choose the gift of love
For my neighbor, my friends and my God above.”
Then the wee fairy smiled for wise was he.
“Fairest child, I knew what thy gifts would be.”

I love the poem, and the pictures of Mom. I put the one in her nurse uniform on mine, cause I love that one. My goal this summer (that Lynn told me to do) is learn how to make her sauerkraut and dumplings so that means you have to teach me, K??? Love you Mom!

I wish I had known your mother. She had to be a wonderful person because she raised a wonderful daughter. I feel so blessed to know you. Happy Birthday to your mom.

I miss grandma much. I love that poem. You need to teach us all how to do the sauerkraut and dumplings. Maybe we should have a girls night and do that.
